History

1945 World War II refugee Zigmund Hirschfeld establishes the Metal Import Company (Mico) in Wellington. Zigmund Hirschfeld
1946 Hirschfeld forms a partnership with fellow refugee Roy Messenger and founds Wakefield Metals in Christchurch.  Both Mico and Wakefield Metals import and distribute brass and copper products.
1946-1980 From the postwar days into the eighties, the two companies progressively expanded their product range to include stainless steel, fasteners, PVC pipeline systems and general plumbing supplies.
Early 1980's Mico Wakefield is adopted as the trading name for both companies.
1994 The two founding families sell out their interests to The Crane Group, Australasia's largest merchant of Plumbing supplies and a leading manufacturer of non-ferrous metals products. Prior to Crane Groups takeover, Mico had distributed Crane’s copper, brass and aluminium product in NZ.
1997 Mico Wakefield divisionalised into two streams - Mico Metals and Mico Plumbing & Pipelines.
2000 Acquisition of Corys Fraser Electrical chain.
2002 Acquisition of MasterTrade Plumbing & Electrical chain

 

Since the latest acquisition, the company has been re-organised into the three divisions: Mico Metals, Mico Plumbing & Pipelines and MasterTrade Corys, forming Crane Distribution NZ Ltd.
